Butterkist – Get things popping!
Art

Our design approach for our kernels has been to create a suite of simple face and body add-ons, almost like a “Mr Potato Head” system. This allows us to keep the corn kernel more realistic in its render.

Our buttery world is kept simple and clean. A fun fantasy with enough little graphic additions to make it charming.

Story

The excitement is palpable! This is the day all the kernels have been waiting for!

The chance to be popped by the Butterkist canon, and forever live as a delicious popcorn kernel.

Craft

Our kernel characters were created using 3D CGI. We first desigedn and modelled the characters like you would a sculpture, but digitally.

Then we surface them, paint on textures and choose whether they are matte, shiny, translucent or bumpy. Following on, we give them a skeleton and a face ‘rig’. This is much like an armature in stop motion. It has a lot of controls for an animator to then craft their performance and bring them to life!
