gossiping cows

With the launch of Almond Breeze almond milk in Australia, we were tasked with the challenge of creating a pair of photorealistic talking cows who had to embody the personality of two-gossiping neighbourhood know-it-alls.

Daisy and Bess are the sticky-beaks of the local herd, and arrival of almond trees on the farm have cast them into a suspicious state. With their milk-making job on the line, we see them spying on the farmer from afar. Daisy and Bess’s performances carry the piece, so we worked to extensively develop the animation of the cows to amplify this humorous and expressive dynamic.

To develop the cows’ distinct characters, we studied real-world human performances (namely Mrs Bucket from Keeping Up Appearances) to inspire the cows’ facial design and range of expression. The resulting combination of realism and stylised characterisation came together neatly to create Daisy and Bess.

a photorealistic
creation

To create cows which could fit seamlessly into a live-action set, we crafted the cows in 3D, using detailed fur simulation and customised the skin, muscle and bone articulation to help the CG cows move as realistically as possible.

3D scanning was used to aid our photorealistic creation of the almond flower and fluid simulation helped create our pristine almond milk splash.

and the most decent human beings you’ll probably ever meet…
