Putting the F-word
into animation
It’s not every day we get to use the F word in an ad. In this case, we’re talking F-unerals, but also, F-unny. The thing we loved most about this project was just how amusing the script was. As usual with comedy, timing is everything, and this is something a script can’t dictate – it comes to life with the characters.
The cast needed to endear themselves to the audience, convey emotion, and have tons of comedic appeal. We created a dialog rhythm that allowed us to land the key message, but in a way that amused and entertained.

One of the challenges we faced was the need to create something cute and hand crafted without tipping over into childish. An animation about a backyard birthday party, but for adults, and without being ‘cartoony’?
Plasticine, but sophisticated. Playful, but in an elevated way. Not easy, but we reckon we nailed it.
From the get-go we had a lot of trust from BMF. Based on previous collabs, we were awarded the project without having to pitch – giving us permission to ‘come out of our shells’ and really go for it.
