TedX Sydney

“My take on the ‘what is reality’ theme was an observation on the nature of relationships and the way we project parts of ourselves onto our loved ones and see what we want to see.”

Art

For TEDxSydney 2020, Substance studio approached a group of the world’s best motion and sound studios to form a global collaboration to illustrate the theme of “REAL”. After all, TEDx is about “ideas worth spreading”, and with reality so open to interpretation, a curated collaboration was perfectly suited to capturing the kaleidoscopic nature of the theme.

Story

Mighty Nice, under Michael Shiao Chen’s direction, came up with a novel new look and art style that straddled the world of 3D and 2D animation.

The brief was to create a short 10 second animation in an open interpretation on the theme of ‘What is reality?’ The creative freedom was very appealing and allowed for a great deal of visual experimentation.

What is reality?

Craft

We used experimental NPR (non-photorealistic) shading techniques to blur the lines of 2D and 3D. An appropriate medium given the broad subject matter on interpreting our realities.
